Basically Coco. Making Basics.

Coco, Coco, Coco, Coco, Coco, Coco…my very first sewing love. I’ve lost count of the number of Cocos that have been under my presser foot. I officially declare Tilly and the Buttons Coco my favourite staple dressmaking pattern. It’s a pattern that I just can’t put down, that I can make in my sleep but after 2 years of sewing I still think I could come up with a dozen more versions.

My latest Coco is the result of an exciting new development in my Sewing adventures. If you’ve read my blog before you may have heard me wax lyrical about Plymouth’s very own ‘Sewing Destination’ Make at 140. Please see picture of this rather glorious sewing dream below, packed with wonderful makers, coffee and fabrics!

I’m very excited to announce that I’m now part of the team at Make, I’ve joined as their Resident Sewing Blogger, fabric chooser and Make Sewcial co-organiser. As part of my new role I’ve been testing out the fantastic new Make Basics range.

As soon as I saw the navy spandex backed crepe my spidey sewing senses knew exactly what it was destined to be…a super swish 60s style Coco.

I also ordered a super sunny Devon day to road test this beaut’ by the seaside with beach huts of course.

Spot the difference? No sleeves and a super big funnel neck for a little added drama! Instahusband was on good form for this shoot, and remarkably these fabulous Dawlish based shots were taken before we stopped to refuel him with teacakes and caffeine.

I think that’s proof enough that you don’t have to be super spendy on the fabric front or pattern flashy to make a beautiful, classic number that you can wear on your own personal seaside catwalk.

If you’re in the Southwest we would love to see you on Friday! Come down to Make for nibbles, all the fabric, and an exciting 15% discount for our Sewcialists! We only have a limited number of spaces so be quick and click here to book your free place.

  1. I’m definitely going to try and make it to a sewcial sometime soon! My tip (as an absolute beginner) is to just go for it! If you don’t try then you’ll never know, if you make a mistake then so what? You’ll learn for next time (and there is almost always a next time!) and at the end of the day if it all goes wrong the at least you’ve given it a go 🙂
